Led Zeppelin – Led Zeppelin I

15 09 2010

Listened: Wednesday September 1

I’m probably in a minority here, but Led Zeppelin I is my favorite album by Led Zeppelin. When I decided I could handle Led Zeppelin, after denying their overpowering testosterone wave for years, I wanted to start at the beginning. I haven’t found any of their albums to be as powerful to me as this one, though Houses of the Holy is a close second.

Every single song here I sing along with and punch the air to (except Black Mountain Side since it has no words and isn’t awesome in the air-punching sense). I love how Robert Plant just goes for it on every song. You never doubt he means every word. His scream is one of the most beautiful in rock music.

I really love the instrumental breakdown in Dazed and Confused which results in a very real sensation of a trip down a vortex (it starts right before “Ohhhhhhh yeeeeeAHUH”). Or maybe it’s the soundtrack to the zeppelin on the cover crashing spectacularly; it certainly could be.

I have played this album during many frustrating times, singing “Communication breakdown, it’s always the same” or “How many more times you treat me the way you wanna do?” and meaning it.

What I want to know is, who goes around licking railings? Is this a euphemism or some joke I don’t get?
