Blink – The End is High

26 06 2010

Listened: Wednesday June 23

Blink is yet another band I had read about somewhere and decided to pick up The End Is High when I saw it for very cheap. But as sometimes happens, it sat in a pile of unreviewed albums and I hadn’t actually listened to it until now.

Blink are Irish and their music is rock, but some of the beats sound a little dance-music influenced. Interesting to note that because of this Blink’s earlier existence, Blink-182 had to add the 182 to their name for copyright reasons. They’re pretty 90s sounding, quite like early Radiohead. I’ll have to listen some more and see if the songs stick.

Kaiser Chiefs – Employment

Kaiser Chiefs are the new Blur, with a slightly punkier edge. Their stage shows are what you might call very energetic – frontman Ricky Wilson is like the Energizer Bunny.

The songs are all full of la-la-las and na-na-nas that get you immediately singing along and tapping your feet and the lyrics are pretty good at painting pictures of love affairs gone bad, potentially violent situations, night clubs, Saturday nights, straight men surrendering to their inner disco dancer…

Wonderfully, I have been very far from home and found myself singing the chorus from Oh My God – “Oh my god, I can’t believe it, I’ve never been this far away from home.” Any song that can spontaneously pop into your head through context is pretty good in my book.
